icotec, a Swiss medical device company focusing on the development of BlackArmor Carbon/PEEK implants, achieved a breakthrough with the world’s first implantation of BlackArmor pedicle screws. Since then, more than 3,500 screws were successfully implanted in patients with degenerative pathologies, spinal trauma, and tumours. When compared to state-of-the-art titanium systems, the radiolucent and nonmetallic BlackArmor material minimizes artifacts in X-rays, CT and MRI and simplifies postoperative diagnosis. Concurrent radiation therapy during tumour treatment is no longer limited by metallic implants.
The VADER system comprises rods and polyaxial pedicle screws made of BlackArmor and utilizes state-of-the-art surgical techniques. All screws are cannulated and titanium-coated in the pedicle area for direct osseointegration. Fenestrations at the screw tip allow for cement augmentation in patients with poor bone quality.
