Welcome note from the BritSpine 2018 hosts
We are delighted to be hosting BritSpine 2018 in the diverse and vibrant cultural city of Leeds, located in the heart of the UK, fifth on Lonely Planet’s list of the 10 best places to visit in Europe in 2017.
This year’s biennial conference and exhibition will take place at the University of Leeds, famous for its range of architectural building style and history, in its renowned Brutalist concrete lecture theatre complex, and modern conference centre.
With Leeds train station just a 20-minute walk from campus you’ll be a stone’s throw from the heart of Leeds city centre and all it has to offer, as well as close to a range of accommodation, and meeting places.
In addition to the main paper presentations, there are a number of unique sessions for 2018 including:

In addition to the main paper presentations, there are a number of unique sessions for 2018 including:
- A session on the interface between spine problems and their genetic basis, and where new genetic advances are taking us.
- A must-attend session on GIRFT and Spinal surgery.
- A number of important and politically charged discussions regarding funding of healthcare and in particular, surgery of the spine in the UK and around the world.
- A session on inflammatory conditions of the spine, and the complexity it brings to surgery.
- A not-to be missed debate on surgery for non-specific back pain with arguments from either side of the pond.
- A session on spinal oncology, and an introduction to some of the cutting-edge oncology therapies soon to be available in the UK.
As in previous years there will be pre-meeting trainees’ cadaver lab that will be held at Leeds Medical School, where the Thiel embalmed cadavers retain their natural colours and flexibility, providing added realism to the simulated operations, as well a Super MDT focusing on Decision Making in Common Complex Spine Problems’ that will run on Tuesday 20th March at Leeds University.
Also on Tuesday 20th March, there will be two additional meetings bringing spinal care “Together”:
- Inaugural meeting of the National Back Pain Clinical Network, with interactive workshops. This will introduce these major initiatives and enable participant feedback through workshops to enhance project implementation, and is open to Allied Health Practitioners of all disciplines as well.
- Patient Liaison Group meeting, with involvement from patients and patient groups.
We welcome you to share these fantastic learning events and networking opportunities at a range of social events. On the Wednesday evening, there will be a Welcome Reception offering you the chance to meet exhibitors and faculty/delegates, while enjoying a glass of wine or a beer with the new addition of street food. Transport to the hotel and late check-in facilities have been arranged.
This year’s Conference Dinner will be held at the Royal Armouries Museum, located at Leeds dock with a three-course evening meal and entertainment.
The local hosts are the Leeds Organising Committee lead by Almas Khan, supported by the United Kingdom Spine Societies Board (UKSSB). They look forward to welcoming you to a stimulating, thought-provoking and enjoyable meeting in Leeds in March 2018.
